'A Terrible Beauty' is a unique film that offers a fresh approach to the 1916 Rising in Dublin. It tells the little-known stories of the ordinary Irish Volunteer, British soldier and civilian caught up in the fighting. It is centered on two linked events during that Easter week, the battles of Mount Street Bridge and North King Street, culminating in the massacre of fifteen innocent young men and boys.

Lord Edward's Own

We were really privileged to work with Lord Edward's Own, a multi-period re-enactment group based in Monasterevin, Co. Kildare. They were an extremely valuable asset during the drama shoots for the film due to the group portraying all sides in the fight for Irish Freedom (1916 - 1920).

They started out primarily portraying the 1798 and 1803 Irish Rebellions and took part in their first show in Charles Fort, Kinsale, Co. Cork in 2003. Since those early days they have expanded to cover many periods in history including portraying the 86th (Leinster) Regiment and Regiment Irlanda in the Napoleonic wars, the Prince of Wales Leinster regiment (Royal Canadians) in the Great War and also The Free State Army (1924 - 1939).

The Irish Great War Society

We were also really lucky to work with The Irish Great War Society during the drama shoots. They are a living history group dedicated to education and remembrance.

In general terms, they provided two basic types of display; the static display and the field display. The former is where members put on show an extensive collection of artefacts, relics and memorabilia from the Great War era.

The field display is where through the realistic re-enactment of First World War scenarios they portray the Irish men and women that served in Irish Regiments of the British Army in 1914 - 1918, and also in other corps and voluntary units.

They constantly strive to bring realism into their field displays by wearing and using authentic uniforms and equipment; also by accurately performing the drills and exercises carried out by service personnel during that period. Displays apart, one of the most important functions that the group take part in is to provide a guard of honour on formal occasions.
